ACH Return Rates

Provides information on Nacha's rules regarding ACH return rates

Return Rates

According to Nacha regulations, the return rate thresholds are as follows:

Unauthorized Entries 0.5%
Administrative Return 3.0%
Overall Return 15.0%

Unauthorized Entries Return

To calculate the Unauthorized Entry Return Rate, divide the number of debit entries returned as unauthorized (R05, R07, R10, R11, R29, and R51) by the total number of debit entries originated during that time period.

Administrative Return

To calculate the Administrative Return Rate, divide the number of debit entries returned for administrative reasons (R02, R03, and R04) by the total number of debit entries originated during that time period.

Overall Return

To calculate the Overall Return Rate, divide the number of entries returned for any reason by the total number of debit entries originated during that time period.

Export Transaction Details Report

The information needed to calculate the return rates can be obtained by running an Export Transaction Details Report in the Online Terminal. In the Online Terminal, go to Reports > Export Transaction Details.

To find the total number of debit entries originated, make sure Payment Method is set to Checks and Date Type is set to Transaction Date. Expand the date range to the desired time period. For the Transaction Types, select Exclude Voids. When you click Export Data, an Excel spreadsheet will be generated containing all of the transaction details. You can use the count function in Excel to find the total number of entries originated.

To calculate the number of return entries in total or by SEC code, set Date Type to Returned Date and choose Returns Only for Transaction Type. When you click Export Data, an Excel spreadsheet will be generated containing all of the transaction details for the returned entries. You can use the sort, subtotal, and count features of Excel to find the number of each type of return.
